I was fresh new to Tampa in1971. There was a middle school right across the street from this hospital. I was called to the ER and there set a young girl of 12, holding a small snake about 15 inches long. She said, “It was on the walk in front of the main door so I picked it up…and it bit me”. I sent her straight to ICU and put the pygmy rattlesnake into a bucket. Odd thing was that I had successfully treated snake bites before I was told to refer it to the psychiatrist on the staff. For reasons unknown to me, he was the local expert in snake bites. She did well and I never knew what he did for her.
